THE LDB Environmental Policy
The Little Dog Bookshop is serious about climate change. We believe it is the single biggest threat facing our Earth, so at the LDB we have a big, hairy, audacious goal to become CARBON NEUTRAL by the end of 2008!
To help us get there, at the LDB we:
- Get all of our energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar through subscribing to GreenPower for 100% of our energy needs;
- Have retrofitted the shop with energy efficient appliances;
- Sourced bookcases made from certified plantation timbers;
- Installed water saving devices in the kitchen and bathroom;
- Offset additional carbon emissions through partnering with a local landowner to establish a re-vegetation program;
- Have become a member of the Australian Booksellers Association through which we join with other booksellers to campaign for a more sustainable book industry;
- Record data on book sales, transport and production so that extra emissions may be offset through financial payments to carbon offsetting companies;
- Have non-book retail items (stationary, gifts) which are sustainable in nature – candles made from soy, not petroleum; cards and gift wrap made from recycled papers and dyed with vegetable inks, not chemicals; and a small collection of exclusive gift items which are completely carbon neutral!
- Avoid the use of plastics and provide recycled plastic bags for customers to use;
- Recycled office waste;
- Encourage our staff to ride their bikes to work.
At the LDB we believe that changing small behaviours to reduce our carbon impact is EASY. And everyone can do it. It’s just a matter of deciding to do so and making the changes. Plus it makes you feel good too, and that’s what life is about, right!
